Identity card
The Belgian Office, Taipei issues electronic identity cards to Belgians who are listed in our population register:
- eID: electronic identity card for adults and children older than 12
- Kids-ID: electronic identity card for children younger than 12
These eID and Kids-ID offer several benefits:
- Handy bank card size
- Possibility to travel to more than 50 countries (more information in French or Dutch)
- Less expensive than a passport: 20 EUR for an eID, 10 EUR for a Kids-ID
- Remains valid in case you move (to another career post, from or to Belgium)
- Allows certain secure actions over the Internet (if the certificates have been activated)
About the eID
Validity of an eID
The validity of your eID depends on your age at the date of the application:

The eID remains valid:
- in case you move (to another career post, from or to Belgium)
- if it was issued by a Belgian municipality and provided that the holder has reported his move to the municipal administration.
The eID is no longer valid:
- if it is reported to have been lost or stolen
- if the holder’s photo is no longer resemblant
- if it was issued after August 2008 by a Belgian municipality and if the holder has not reportedhis move abroad to the municipal administration.
How much does an eID cost?
An eID costs 20 EUR, regardless of the age of the applicant.
How to obtain an eID at the BOT?
In order to obtain an eID, you will be required to come in person and prior appointment at the Belgian Office, Taipei (make an appointment via e-appointment). You may either email us (taipei@diplobel.fed.be) or send the following form available in Dutch ( afspraakformulier (PDF, 100.68 KB)) or in French (
formulaire de rendez-vous (PDF, 114.41 KB)).
You may also reqest an eID at 1) the commune which you were last registered in, 2) the municipality in which you were born if you have never lived in Belgium but were born there, or 3) the municipality of your choice if you have never lived in Belgium and were not born in Belgium either. Proceeding that way is however more expensive (approx. 100 EUR depending on the municipality processing the request). The eID and PUK code will be delivered to the municipality within 2 working days. You will be able to activate the card immediately.
Activation of eID cards
Belgian citizens duly registered at the Belgian Office, Taipei may activate their eID at the BOT, in another Belgian diplomatic or consular post or in a Belgian commune. Cards and certificates can only be activated in person, including for persons under the age of 18. To activate their eID, citizens shall bring their eID and PUK code. The activation of the eID enables the holders to identify themselves and give their consent securely over the Internet in an internationally accepted manner (digital signature).
About the Kids-ID
Validity of a Kids-ID
A Kids-ID has a validity of 3 years, even in case you move (to another career post or from or to Belgium).
The Kids-ID is no longer valid:
- if it is reported to have been lost or stolen
- if the holder’s photo is no longer resemblant
How much does a Kids-ID cost?
A Kids-ID costs 10 EUR.
How to obtain a Kids-ID at the BOT?
There are two options to obtain a Kids-ID.
- Your child is older than 6: you and your child request the Kids-ID at the BOT
Kindly use the appointment form in either Dutch (afspraakformulier (PDF, 130.14 KB) ) or French (
formulaire de rendez-vous (PDF, 133.24 KB)) and send it by mail or post to the BOT. Don't forget to pay for the Kids-ID (10 EUR) as well as the sending costs, once the appointment has been confirmed.
- Your child is younger than 6: you may either come to the BOT (see above) or request a Kids-ID by post

You will be able to activate the card immediately. Please bote that requesting a Kids-ID in a commune will also require the presence of both parents.
For children under the age of 12, the Kids-ID will be delivered to the parent living at the same address of the applicant. The eID (age 12 and above) will be delivered directly to the applicant, even if s/he is still a minor.
Service “Hello parents”
The phone number mentioned on the Kids-ID (+32 78 150350) is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In case a child carrying its Kids-ID has lost its way, any person finding it can easily contact its parents or a contact person thanks to a cascade system of phone numbers that has been activated by the parents. Activation Kids-ID
Belgian citizens duly registered at the BOT and with a child also registered at the BOT may activate their eID at the BOT or in a Belgian commune. Parents (or legal representatvives) may activate their child's Kids-ID, including in absence of the child. Cards and certificates can only be activated in person, including for persons under the age of 18. To activate their eID, citizens shall bring their eID and PUK code. Certificates can no longer be activated for minors under the age of 12 but can be activiated once they reach that age. To do so, applicants may bring their card and PUK code to the BOT.
